Eye pain can be difficult to ignore, especially when there is no obvious injury or explanation. Some discomfort may come from something relatively minor, such as dryness or eye strain, while other types of pain can point to an eye condition that needs prompt attention. At Clarity Vision in Apex, we can evaluate unexplained eye pain to determine what may be causing your symptoms and what type of care you need.
Eye pain does not feel the same for everyone. Depending on the cause, discomfort may occur on the surface of the eye or feel deeper behind or around the eye.
Patients may describe symptoms such as:
Burning, stinging, or a gritty sensation
Aching or throbbing in or around the eye
Sharp or sudden eye pain
Sensitivity to light
Pain when blinking or moving the eyes
Redness, watering, or irritation
Eye pain accompanied by blurry vision
Where the pain occurs and whether other symptoms are present can provide important clues about its cause.
Dry eye is one possible cause of recurring discomfort. When the tear film does not adequately lubricate and protect the eye, the surface can become irritated, leading to burning, soreness, or a foreign-body sensation.
Eye strain may also cause discomfort, particularly after extended periods of reading, computer use, or other close-up activities. Contact lens problems, allergies, eyelid inflammation, corneal scratches, and foreign material in the eye can cause pain as well.
In some cases, eye pain can be related to inflammation or infection involving structures of the eye. Because several different conditions can produce similar symptoms, an eye exam is often the best way to determine what is actually happening.
Persistent or unexplained eye pain should not simply be ignored. We recommend scheduling an eye evaluation if your discomfort keeps returning, becomes worse, or is accompanied by redness, discharge, light sensitivity, or changes in vision.
Certain symptoms may require more immediate medical attention. Severe eye pain, sudden vision changes, an eye injury, chemical exposure, significant swelling, new halos around lights, or eye pain with nausea and vomiting should be evaluated promptly.
Our comprehensive evaluations combine a detailed eye exam with advanced diagnostic technology, including optical coherence tomography (OCT), digital retinal and anterior segment imaging, corneal topography, tonometry, and slit lamp examination. These tools allow us to closely evaluate the cornea, retina, optic nerve, eye pressure, and other structures to look for signs of irritation, injury, inflammation, infection, or other eye health concerns. Treatment depends on the cause of your discomfort, allowing us to recommend appropriate care rather than simply masking your symptoms.
If unexplained eye pain is making it difficult to work, read, drive, or go about your day, schedule an eye exam with Clarity Vision to have your symptoms properly evaluated. Contact our office in Apex, NC, or call (919) 367-2832 to book an appointment today.
