10 Lifestyle Changes for Macular Degeneration Prevention

Unfortunately, aging brings greater risk of many health problems. Macular degeneration (MD) is one such condition. In fact, about 10 million American adults over the age of 55 suffer this retina disease that ultimately causes vision loss. Scientists do not yet know the specific causes of MD. However, you can make some lifestyle changes for macular degeneration prevention.

10 Lifestyle Changes for Macular Degeneration Prevention

Tufts Medical’s New England Eye Center conducts research into macular degeneration. They also recommend healthy lifestyle habits for macular degeneration prevention. If you or someone you love are age 55 or older, it is important to make these lifestyle changes for a multitude of health benefits. But younger people should also live according to these standards for decreased odds of developing MD in later years.

Do Not Smoke

Smoking causes a wide range of health problems, including MD. For macular degeneration prevention, do not start smoking and if you already do smoke, quit immediately. Furthermore, a smoke-free lifestyle benefits your eye health in many ways.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Your diet should include a range of healthy foods. Of particular goodness are green, leafy vegetables and fruits. Add kale, spinach and collard greens into your meal plans for eye health benefits.

Take In Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are key to macular degeneration prevention and other health benefits. Also, you receive these fatty acids through salmon, mackerel, albacore tuna, sardines and herring. Eat these types of fish at least once or two times weekly.

Avoid Processed Foods

Snack cakes, potato chips, cookies, candies and soft drinks offer little nutritional benefit, particularly when manufactured in bulk and loaded with preservatives. Avoid these foods as much as possible for better eye health.

Avoid Partially Hydrogenated Fats

Partially hydrogenated fats like palm oils and coconut oils are not good for your body, when it comes to macular degeneration prevention. Avoid these and replace them with moderate amounts of olive oil, canola oil or flaxseed oil.

Maintain Good Health

Good overall health is critical for your eye health. For prevention of macular degeneration and other eye diseases, maintain normal blood pressure. Also keep your blood sugar in healthy range, along with your cholesterol levels. Avoid obesity and work to maintain a healthy weight.

Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise offers so many benefits, including macular degeneration prevention. Walk for 30 minutes each day or participate in yoga, aerobic activities or other active sports you enjoy.

Avoid UV Exposure

Avoid ultraviolet ray exposure in your eyes. Wear a hat and sunglasses when outside during bright sunlight. This protects your eyes from UV rays and blue light for better all-around eye health. If you use a sunbed or sun lamp, wear eye protection and do not look directly into the light.

Supplement Your Diet

If you have a family history of MD, it is particularly important to eat a healthy diet and take key supplements. These supplements include lutein and vitamins C, D and E. You also need to supplement your diet by taking zeaxanthin, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil).

You Need Annual Eye Health Exams

Scientists do not yet know what causes MD. The above 10 lifestyle changes can help you avoid the disease through macular degeneration prevention. At the same time as preserving as much of your eyesight as possible, you will live a longer, healthier and more active lifestyle.

People of all ages need to visit their optometrist or ophthalmologist at least once yearly or as directed by the eye doctor. Vision screening and eye health exams are particularly important for young children and people over the age of 55. If you are an aging adult, your eye doctor looks for signs of macular degeration in your annual eye exam.
