Transitions Lenses

Transitions lenses, also known as photochromic lenses, are described as prescription lenses that “transition” from clear lenses to colored sunglass tints when the lens is exposed to UV rays. This type of lens is regarded as a valuable upgrade over more traditional eyeglass lenses as they offer the wearer the combination of both sunglass and eyeglass lenses. Clarity Vision of Apex offers the full line of Essilor products including the ever popular Transitions + Crizal + Varilux lenses.

HOW DO PHOTOCHROMIC LENSES WORK?

In transition lenses, photochromic compounds have been built into these lenses, and it is the UV rays from the sun that trigger these compounds to transition or darken. When out of sunlight, these lenses will change back to a clear-state through what is known as a type of thermal process. Beyond these basic processes, different environmental conditions will have a significant impact on how photochromic eyewear performs.

The transition lenses are a suitable option for individuals that prefer to wear the same prescription glasses when working both outdoors and indoors without having to worry about changing lenses when going in and out. However, when it comes to this versatile type of eyewear, there are a couple of key factors to consider.

One of the first considerations with the transition lenses has to do with the fact that because they are activated by UV light rays, they are unable to transition when driving a car. This is the case because most car windshields and car windows block UV rays which are responsible for activating the lenses from changing from clear to brown, green or grey.

One of the other important considerations about photochromatic lenses is that in higher temperatures, the lenses will be less dark. This has to do with a thermal effect known as “temperature dependency” which will stop the photochromic lenses from reaching true sunglass-darkness in extremely hot weather. For those that spend much of their time in very bright or extremely hot conditions, like in the desert or on tropical beaches, the transition lenses may not be the most suitable eyewear option. Traditional prescription sunglasses may be a better idea in these hotter environments.

THE PROS AND CONS OF TRANSITION LENSES

Eyeglasses that feature photochromatic lenses definitely offer convenience, but before deciding on this lens type, here are advantages and drawbacks associated with photochromic glasses.

The Pros Of Transition Lenses

• They offer convenience in the way that one pair of glasses can be used under the majority of circumstances whether outdoors or indoors.

• These lenses provide continuous UV protection, which means that they act as effective sunglasses and protect the eyes when outdoors.

• They are available in a variety of colors and styles and are able to meet the prescription requirements for most people. For those who require progressives, bifocals or shatter-resistant lenses, or any other type of specific requirement, there are a variety of photochromic lenses available. In fact our brand partner, Essilor, offers a lens package that offers 3 huge benefits in one lens with the following: Photochromatic lens technology to adjust to variable lighting conditions and block UV as well as Blue Light; Crizal to reduce reflections and glare; and Varilux progressive lens technology to provide clear vision at any distance.

The Cons Of Transition Lenses

• They lighten and darken to different degrees which will depend on the actual brand. Some brands take a lot longer to transition than others. For this reason, it is important for the wearer to discuss their options and needs with a qualified eye care professional. The eye doctors at Clarity Vision specialize in helping patients with these lens decisions and will make sure you get the best possible transition lens for your needs.

• These lenses may take longer to change when the weather is cold.

• They typically won’t darken while driving because car windshields block UV rays, but there are lenses which have been designed for this purpose.

Transitions® XTRActive® lenses do activate moderately when behind the wheel as they are designed to also react to visible light, and many people choose them for driving. In addition, Transitions® Drivewear® sun lenses are another choice designed to self-adjust to changes in visible light. And they are polarized to enhance visual performance and the driving experience by automatically changing their degree of darkness and color. Ultimately, this is a specialty driving lens designed to provide a more enjoyable driving experience.

As you can see, there are a number of options in photochromic lenses. Your Clarity Vision Eye Care professional will help you select the best lens for your needs, from prescription sunglasses and polarized sunglasses to performance sunwear to the new Essilor Transitions® Vantage® lenses that feature variable polarization.
