What Is the Most Common Retinal Disease?

The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye that plays an essential role in how we see. Several conditions can affect the retina, but age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, is one of the most common retinal diseases, particularly among older adults. AMD affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for detailed central vision.

Understanding Age-Related Macular Degeneration

AMD gradually affects central vision, which can make everyday activities such as reading, recognizing faces, driving, and seeing fine details more difficult. Peripheral, or side, vision is generally not affected in the same way.

There are two primary forms of AMD - dry and wet. Dry AMD is more common and typically progresses gradually. Wet AMD is less common but may cause more rapid changes in vision due to abnormal blood vessels that leak fluid or blood beneath the retina.

Signs of Macular Degeneration

AMD may develop without noticeable symptoms in its early stages, which is one reason routine eye exams are important. As the condition progresses, possible changes may include:

  • Blurry or reduced central vision

  • Straight lines appearing wavy or distorted

  • Dark or blank areas in the center of vision

  • Difficulty seeing in low-light conditions

  • Colors appearing less vivid

  • Increased difficulty recognizing faces or reading

If you notice sudden or significant changes in your vision, an eye examination can help determine what may be affecting your retinal health.

Who Is at Risk for AMD?

Age is an important risk factor for macular degeneration. Other factors may also influence a person's likelihood of developing retinal disease, including family history, smoking, and certain overall health conditions. Because symptoms are not always obvious early on, regular retinal evaluations become increasingly important as you get older.

How We Evaluate Retinal Health in Smithfield

At Clarity Vision, we use advanced eye care technology to closely examine the retina and look for changes that may require further attention. Our Smithfield office offers Optomap retinal imaging, which creates a detailed digital view of the retina and can help us identify and monitor signs of conditions such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

Regular eye exams also allow us to compare retinal images over time, helping us identify changes that may otherwise go unnoticed.

If you are concerned about retinal disease, experiencing changes in your vision, or are due for an eye exam, schedule an appointment with Clarity Vision for personalized eye care. Visit our office in Smithfield, North Carolina, or call (919) 737-7200 today.
